As sad as it is, most children born in the 40s, 50s and 60s had parents that smoked. If you are over the age of 35, its quite likely that your mother smoked while she was pregnant with you.
Somehow, though, most children didn’t end up disfigured. Smoking is awful for you, no doubt, but lets not exaggerate.

Sure it isn’t ideal for the fetus but certainly not as bad as you are all making it out to be. Plenty of women smoked while pregnant with plenty of babies and there has been no epidemic. Probably some of your mothers did too if you’re in your late 20’s to 30’s. Everybody smoked in 60’s and even 70’s. If not cigarettes than something else.

The only thing that smoking while pregnant is proven to do is cause lower birth weight. Not saying I would ever smoke while pregnant but in my mother’s time, everyone did it and they all turned out fine. There are so many worse things they could be doing

the blatant misogyny here is shocking and disgusting - yes, obviously this woman isn’t well informed about the risks of smoking while pregnant, or so addicted she sadly hasn’t been able to quit - but as another reader pointed out, many of us over 35 had moms that smoked like fiends while we were in utero and are generally healthy. While I would agree that this isn’t the brightest move - the hateful name calling is completely inappropriate and unnecessary and feels like an excuse to express the hate of women more than the disagreement with this one womans choices.

So the woman doesn’t understand the dangers of smoking - or isn’t able to stop. It’s an *addiction*. She may not be able to stop.
As someone pointed out, smoking was quite common only a few decades ago, and there wasn’t some epidemic of birth defects from it. It probably does harm the fetus in some cases, but whatever harm it does isn’t overwhelming.
The jackhammers probably wouldn’t hurt the fetus much, either.

Hmmm….Is the cigarette lit? I’ve seen more than one ex-smoker use an unlit cigarette as a pacifier.Based on what I can see it isn’t.No smoke issuing from the cigarette,no obivious ash on the end.
